College Students Love to Travel

June 22nd, 2010 | By nopadon in Luggage | No Comments »

College students love to travel and they don’t mind going far from home. When they have an opportunity to take courses overseas or travel anywhere, they will generally jump at the chance. How to be prepared for this travel? The school itself can give you plenty of information. You may also do research on the web, and talk with other students who have taken the same trip. When leaving the country, you will need a current passport. You may also need a visa. It’s important to check if you require any shots before entering a foreign country. Bring along any prescriptions of medications in the original bottles or containers that you may need to take. If you have allergies, bring the medication in the original bottle. Make sure that you can use your cell phone where you’re going. Sometimes all it takes is a call to your current cell phone provider to use the phone overseas at a lower rate. Make sure you have at least one credit card, and call the company before you leave so they know you are traveling. Make copies of your passport and student ID and keep them in a separate safe place. You’ll want to check what kind of weather to expect and pack accordingly. You will need to check with the airlines you are using before you begin to pack your lightweight luggage. Find out if there are weight restrictions and or size restrictions on your bags. Usually, the 30″ size duffel on wheels is the best to pack and you can usually take along two of these. Brands like Prolite Luggage and Skyway Luggage make duffels that can hook together for ease in rolling. They will also collapse down when not in use.

If you only use certain brands of toothpaste or deodorant you’ll want to check if these are available where you are going. If not, you’ll need to pack a supply to last your trip. Remember, that you can only carry on three-ounce size containers in a one quart sized bag. You’ll also need an electrical currency converter if you are planning to use your own hairdryer, hair straightener, electric toothbrush, etc., overseas. If you have an international appliance with dual voltage, you will still need an adapter plug. Grounded plugs are especially important for laptops. Small travel umbrellas and rain jackets are handy when the weather calls for it. A lightweight travel clock is also a necessity. Many of these items may have been received as corporate gifts. They have a company name or logo imprinted on them and is very useful. Besides the TSA locks which are used on your baggage, you may want to bring along a cable lock. This will lock your belongings in your room. Another good idea is to bring along a money belt that also holds your passport. These are worn underneath your clothing and protect your valuables from being stolen. There are different models that can be worn around the neck, around the waist or shoulder, or around the leg.

Folding totes are especially handy to have to bring back any items you may purchase while you travel. These come in duffel shapes or large totes. They tuck away inside your discount luggage, and are wonderful to use for short weekend trips, and also for any gifts you may buy. These folding cases are very lightweight and you’ll make good use of them. Most of them have shoulder straps for ease in carrying. You’ll also need your backpack or school bag for books and school supplies. These can usually be carried onto the plane with you as your carryon. Be sure to check on the size requirements before leaving for the airport. Some airlines will let you carry on a small rolling piece as well as your backpack. Remember, if you bring on any liquids or gels they must be packed inside the 3-1-1 kit.

Language translators or guidebooks are helpful if you do not speak the language of the country you are studying in. Some of the newer translators will pronounce the word for you and spell the word phonetically. Among your travel accessories, make sure you have a journal to write down the many new places you’ll see and visit. You can look back in your journal years from now and remember where you’ve gone. You can also assist other students with ideas and places you especially enjoyed while in that country.

Gap year students can forget about lugging their packs abroad

June 16th, 2010 | By nopadon in Luggage | No Comments »

In recent years it has become increasingly popular to head off on a round-the-world trip between finishing school and heading off to university. Gap years to Australia, New Zealand and South Africa can vary enormously depending on how much money you have, how long you’re away from home for and what you’re looking to get out of the trip.

But one thing tends to remain constant for students heading out on their big adventure – a gigantic rucksack. Struggling through an airport laden down with clothes, a tent, cooking gear, a guitar and more jumpers than you could ever have need for during an Australian summer can be character building. But it can also be extremely tiring, cumbersome and restricting.

Getting away on a gap year is about experiencing life, and getting stuck with an oversized pack can cut down your options or at the very least make getting about particularly difficult. Thankfully, there is another way.

People travelling abroad for extended periods of time are increasingly turning to baggage shipping companies to transport their extra belongings from their home to their destination. Some companies cover as many as 300 countries and territories worldwide and will offer a door-to-door service which sees your baggage collected from your door, and delivered to your destination, meaning you won’t even have to think about customs. Door-to-port services are also available. Your bags are collected and shipped to the country of your choice, and you’re then able to pick them up at the destination terminal.

There are many advantages of choosing to use a baggage shipping company, apart from the obvious benefit of not having to carry heavy bags around with you.

Taking excess baggage on a plane can work out to be expensive, especially if you have packed more items than you planned and the luggage exceeds your airline’s weight limit. And simple things like going to the toilet can turn into a real adventure if you have to get through a turnstile with a 70 litre rucksack on your back. Additionally, you may well be put off going into a cafe or a shop for fear of knocking something over and creating havoc.

So if you’d rather concentrate on enjoying the experience of a lifetime by jetting off to the other side of the world without having to worry about dragging a huge pack behind you, then find out how easy shipping to Australia really is, and it is to move your belongings safely by air, sea or road with a trusted baggage shipping company.

How Can Students Get the Most Affordable Air Fares?

June 16th, 2010 | By nopadon in Air Ticket | No Comments »

Being a student is not just about studying but also entails critical lessons in life of how to manage on a budget and how to travel when broke. Finding a low cost and affordable airfare for travel is a big challenge for any student.

But do not lose heart. There are ways for you, as a student, to get inexpensive airfares and commute to all those exotic locales you always wanted to. Just follow the points given here, and you might find the airfare just right for you.

KNOW YOUR OPTIONS: As a full-time student you have the option of booking student-only fares. You do not have to book the same tickets as everyone else. Generally speaking, student fares are often cheaper for global travel while regular fares tend to be lower for national travel.

Do remember that student fares are usually more flexible, allowing you to change your travel dates or cancel your flight at a small fee. You can also and stay in your destination for up to a year before returning. Regular tickets, on the other hand, are nonrefundable and non-changeable, and cause you to return within 30 days.

BUYING SPREE: Dont expect to book your student tickets anywhere. The finest places are student transportation agencies, the airlines, and online travel-booking sites.

The student travel agencies allow you to speak directly with their travel agents and they will advise you on the minimum fares, the various options, and even help you finalize your itinerary.

The cheapest regular fares are often sold directly through the airlines’ own websites, where you can access sale fares that might not be available through other providers. Several low-cost airlines offer lower fares than the regular airlines. However, the downside to low-cost carriers is that most have more limited flight networks and may not offer the destinations you want.

As a student you can also compare fares on a multitude of airlines at the same time by using an online travel-booking site such as Orbitz, Expedia, or Travelocity. These sites are good because they help you to set a price benchmark for your itinerary. They will help you choose the cheapest days to fly. Orbitz, for example, has partnered with Student Universe, an online travel site for college students and faculty.

Students or teachers register with a “.edu” e-mail address, which is verified before they qualify to receive travel discounts. Choices of airline or departure time may be strict, but the savings can be worth it. They also have useful tools that can help you determine the cheapest days to fly.

These sites are rather limiting in that they do not always have access to the airlines’ cheapest fares, and all add a booking fee to each purchase. So, these sites can be used just get an idea of what’s accessible and then go to airlines’ websites to book.

SHOP AROUND: Never make a choice immediately. Shop around and compare all options around before making a decision. As a student you should consult with one or more of the student-travel agencies to check the prices of student fares and then do an online search of the airline websites and online travel-booking sites to find regular fares.

Remember that being flexible is the key to the game. The more flexible you are about when you fly and which airport you use, the better your chances of finding an inexpensive ticket. When searching for the right fare for you, try looking for flights on different dates; sometimes flying even a day earlier or later than your original travel dates.

This can save you a lot of bucks. You can also consider searching for fares from other airports or smaller secondary airports. Even though secondary airports may take a bit of travel to get to, you’ll often pay much less to fly to or from these places.

POPULARITY DOESNT PAY: You can find cheaper flights by flying to a state during a less busy time of the year and less busy times of the day. Do remember that popular destinations such as Europe and Australia have distinct high seasons for travelers. It is at times like these that the prices of the air tickets go up If you can commute to a place when it’s less widely known to visit, you may be able save over half the cost of the ticket or even more!!

Similarly, which days of the week you choose to fly and when you choose to travel throughout the day can also make a difference? Midweek flights Monday through Thursday have a propensity to be cheaper, and red-eye or midday flights can also cost a reduced amount of.

Web-only fares are yet another category of special deal fares available only through the Internet. For even deeper discounts, look for Weekend Web Fares. Airlines trying to unload inventory release these fares early Wednesday morning for travel beginning Thursday, Friday or Saturday and returning Sunday, Monday or Tuesday.

EARLY BIRD CATCHES THE WORM: Being an early bird does pay. Flights on widely used routes fill up swiftly. If you book early, you may be able to lock in a fare with a lower surcharge. For general domestic travel, it’s a good idea to book at least 21 days ahead of schedule.

By mastering these essential lessons you, as a student, will be able to plan low-priced air trips over the years, without having to bother about your financial state.
